Culture
The Greek theatre history began with festivals honoring their gods. A god, Dionysus, was honored with a party called "City Dionysia". In Athens, during this festival, men would sing songs to welcome Dionysus. Plays were only performed at The City Dionysia festival. Athens was the main center for these theatrical traditions. Athenians spread this festival to its allies to become a more known and popular city.
At the early Greek plays, the actor and directors were the same person. Later on, only three actors were allowed to perform in each play.Soon after, non-speaking roles became allowed to be on stage.
The audience was so far away that the actors must use big and bold costumes and masks. Because the masks were made of linen or cork, no mask survived. The shape of the mask made the actors words louder and easier to hear.

Sculptures
Because Greece had a lot of stone, marble and limestone, these were most often used for sculptures. The sculptures told stories of the Gods, Heroes, Events, Mythical Creatures and Greek culture. Most of the Greek sculptures that have survived to today, are from Rome even though the Greek made them. The Romans had a lot of respect for Greek sculptures and liked to collect them or copy them. If the Romans had not copied the sculptures, many of the Greek stories would not be around today.
